Why is 2020 the best year to visit Sintra?

The year 2020 will be the best year to plan a visit to Sintra, Portugal. Why? Because is the 25th anniversary of UNESCO recognition as a Cultural Landscape. In fact, it was the first site in Europe to be recognized.

More than 200 events in Sintra!

To celebrate this, all parishes in the municipality will commemorate with over 200 events from historical recreations, parties and popular fairs to exhibitions, conferences, concerts and plays.

“It is about continuing the strategy of bringing culture to everyone.”, said Basílio Horta, Mayor of Sintra.

Among the countless planned cultural events, according to Parques de Sintra, “more than 100 musical moments, more than 70 theatre plays, 20 days of historical creations, 12 party events and fairs, a dozen conferences and eight new exhibitions”.

3 million people are expected

During the celebrations of 25 years of classification as World Heritage, all municipal museums have free admission. The municipality’s objective, which foresees that 3 million people participate, is “to show the diversity of the county’s cultural manifestations. At the same time reaffirmes the municipality’s heritage and its unquestionable mark in local, national and world history ”.

Highlights

One of the biggest highlights given by the organization is the exhibition “No Reino das Nuvens: os artistas e a invenção de Sintra”, by curator Victor dos Reis, which will bring together works on the municipality from different periods of history.

In Music, the International Festival of Traditional Music of Sintra (18th to 20th September) stands out, with several concerts of traditional stringed instruments.

Between the 2nd and the 9th of May, the 18th edition of the Festival of Classical Theater will take place, at the Archeological Museum of São Miguel de Odrinhas.

In cinema, the highlight goes to the 14th edition of the Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival, between the 13th and 22nd of November, and open-air cinema sessions, to be held on the lawn of the Monserrate Palace.

One of the big marks of this year is the creation of the Route of the Historical Fountains of Sintra, which starts on February 14th and includes visits to the São Pedro fountain, Sabuga, Pipa fountain and Moorish fountain.

There are, in fact, more than 200 reasons to visit Sintra this year!

Sintra was classified as World Heritage, in the “Cultural Landscape” category, on December 6, 1995. This happened during the 19th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, held in Germany.
