What to Expect

The Alentejo is where Portuguese culture is most alive and untouched. On this tour we’ll visit the heart of this rural Portuguese region. Here lies the museum like city of Évora and the medieval village of Monsaraz.

Jump into the heart of Portuguese rural identity and let yourself be dazzled by this ancient UNESCO world heritage city. From the Neolithic (6000 BC) to the Roman empire, through the Arabic domination and on to the final settling of the Christians, Monsaraz is a national history museum, home to some of the greatest monuments in Portugal.

Surrounded by the vast rural plains of the Alentejo, there isn’t a better place to discover the Portuguese countryside and gastronomy including: olive oil, wine and cork tree forests.

Itinerary

Start

Enjoy a complimentary Hotel pick up from your guide at 8:30am and enjoy a 1:30h ride to Évora through beautiful countryside while your guide talks about the cork farms, local biodiversity and the unique identity of the Alentejo region.

1Bone Chapel

Our first stop is in Évora at the Bone Chapel – an intriguing 17th century chapel covered with human bones.

2Évora Cathedral

From here we’ll walk through the streets of Évora towards one of the most important Portuguese Cathedrals and a prime example of Romanic/gothic architecture.

3Roman Temple of Diana

Right next to it we’ll admire the well preserved 2000-year-old temple of Diana and learn about the importance of the city for the Roman Empire.

4Monsaraz

After tasting the amazing gastronomy of the region, we’ll leave Évora for a 40-minute scenic drive through vast olive oil plantations and famous Portuguese vineyards towards Monsaraz – a tiny medieval hill-top town on the Portuguese/Spanish border overlooking the countryside and the biggest artificial lake in Europe. From its castle you can admire the picturesque village and the bullfighting arena built within its historic walls.

Finish

From Monsaraz we’ll drive you directly back to your Hotel/AirBnB or another place of your choice.
